Windlass Lube...

Postby dino » Wed Oct 18, 2006 5:09 pm

I can't seem to find the servicing info in the spec's for the windlass..Primarily the lube that is recommended.

Anyone have any idea?? ATF, Gear Oil etc.

We have a Lofrans Tigres 1200.

Thanks!

For manual windlasses it is the same as winch grease. It must be the type that can be used in a marine environment with dissimilar metals. Boat trailer axle grease can also be used. The important thing is not to use generic auto bearing grease that may contain materials that conduct and therefor set up a galvanic corrosion scenario inside the windlass.

I've forgotten if it needs to have or not have lithium...

I would expect the same is true for electric windlasses, it might even be more important as there is DC going to the winch.

You may be able to find an owners manual on the web.
