This whole thing just makes me wonder: "why"...?

Why a hollow shank? Shouldn't it be heavy, strong... (I know, heavy does not = strong... but shouldn't it be both). Don't you want the shank to stay down...

I can't imagine the reason for this design...

The Spade anchor is advertised as having most of the weight in the tip of the anchor, maybe this is done by keeping the shank hollow. Was this the aluminum or steel Spade anchor? Wonder if they're both hollow.

We've been cruising full time with our aluminum Spade anchor for five years now and haven't had any issues with it. Never dragged once, either in mud, sand, gravel, rock or grass. It's attached to 200' of 5/16" high test chain. We've been so pleased with it that I would love to get another for the secondary or as a back up.

The shank is hollow and is easily noticeable as hollow. When you assemble the Spade Anchor you can easily see it is hollow. Or if you simply flip the anchor you can see that the shank goes to the bottom of the fluke and you can actually see into the shank. The Shank is a 3 piece design that is welded together in the same manner that I beams for high rise construction are made. This is considerably stronger then a single piece of steel, that can snap. With the shank being 3 pieces it will bend before it snaps.
There is no need to worry about the hollow shank rusting as it is galvanized steel.
Also please do not drill holes in the shank it voids the lifetime warranty. There is an inexpensive bow roller kit that can be added to your set up and it only takes 1 bolt to install it.

They make the shanks hollow to influence the CG so the anchor will right itself and dig in.
