Why are HC's so heavy?
Have you been surprised by the weight of your HC during a haul out or road transport. Additionally the specified displacement figures appear to be way off. 18500 pounds (9.5 US ton) specified for the HC33, Respite weighs in around 11 ton US. Their is also variances in materials used over the years between Taiwan/Thailand built boats so displacement weights will vary of course. I thought I would share the fact that the door knobs on Respite are turned from solid brass stock and weigh over one pound each. That's about half a kilogram. 2 kilograms of door knobs alone. I weighed a modern new spun knob and it weighs .06 of a KG! Interesting and testimony that HC's are built like no other boats, I can now understand where all the displacement comes from.

When we last hauled out we were shocked too. The scales showed 30,000 lbs or 15 tons. Granted, we are fully loaded for cruising and had full water tanks and full fuel tank. But that sure is a lot of weight to push through the water. Then again, I never expect to go fast, just to be comfortable.

Fiberglass adsorbs water. Sometimes a lot more than you would like. Check the weight At haul out and then again after a long time in the ( dry) yard.

Haulout for survey of 38T showed 32000 lbs. With not much in her. Makes em ride better!

Because they are built like a tank!!!!

Wife and I were looking to buy a bigger boat because our 33 was a bit too smal for the wife’s taste. We plan on going cruising next year. We looked at all types of sailboats, including a Baba 40 and a Mason 44, both built by the “renoun” Ta Shing Yard. We were very disappointed, both boats are nice to look at but they seemed fragile compared to our HC.
We flew to San Francisco to look at the Baba 40 and a HC 33 oddly enough was also for sale right next to the Baba. We were able to do a very good comparison between both boats.....wow, talk about a mismatch.
The hull on the Baba was thick compared to the Catalina 38 sitting next to it ofcourse....but nothing like our HC!!
The chain locker on the Baba was an eye opener because you could see how some parts of the fiberglass were so thin you could see light behind it.

Our boat is I Puerto Rico and just went thru two CAT 5’s and survived with just a scratch from hitting the concrete wall that’s part of our slip. Amazingly it just scratched the paint, two slips down an island packet 38 kept hitting the wood pylon, it destroyed the hulls fiberglass to pieces and sunk the sailboat!! Ours.....just a scratch, THATS how amazing our sailboats are.
Now, we are not sure if we want to sell our beautiful boat, she’s a trooper!!
