Hello,
I haven't done any cruising yet, so I can't comment based on direct experience...but everything I've read says a windvane steering mechanism is potentially the most important piece of gear on a cruising boat. While an electric auto pilot might work quite well on short cruises, using one for 5 to 15 days straight 24 hours a day is an entirely different matter. The problem being if the auto pilot fails, someone is hand steering.
If your plans are for short trips between ports, then the auto pilot would likley be fine, but if you're planning for transatlantic or pacific crossings, etc then I don't think you can safely be without one.
Thanks,
