Hello everyone,

It's time to re engine :( :cry: .
Can anyone help with the Hp that was recommended by the designers
To bring a HC38t to hull speed??

Our ISUZU C240 is a 60hp. My inspection of the engine output specifications showed that it likely at best had about 50hp output and that would drive the 38T to hull speed with a 2 blade prop and clean bottom. Anything more than that hp rating is not necessarily an advantage and actually could be a disadvantage since the engine would be "idling" rather than working. My understanding is that diesels like to be working at their top end to reduce carbonization. The additional hp and weight would not make the boat more efficient.

I've seen more than one 38 that reaches hull speed just fine on the Yanmar 3QM/30 horse engine, but I would regard that as minimal, depending on your accessories, e.g., high output alternator(s), cold plate refrigeration, water maker.

I would tend to agree with Mark's assessment of 50-60 horses. Regarding weight, diesels these days weigh less than those of 30 years ago. You'll likely be able to increase HP without increasing weight.

Just a few thoughts on engine selection for a repower. Correct newer engines are lighter and higher reving. One reason for higher revolutions is to run cleaner and reduce emissions. HP is not the most important factor, torque at the optimum RPM also needs to be considered. I suspect that longevity has been sacrificed with higher reving newer designs. The old 3QM30 reportedly are good for 10000 hours. Lot of choices out there. China have knock offs of some of the older designs at good prices. You can buy two for the price of some of the bigger name brands!
