In response to Bruadair's question regarding their Kanzaki transmission (thanks Bruadair!).

The Kanzaki is built for freewheeling.
And freewheeling causes less drag.

Thanks for the post, Ricardo!

In case anyone is wondering, the KH18, which is common in the HC33 and other HCs as well, is a Kanzaki transmission.

Confirmation

On my 33 I have a 3QM (1981) matched with a KH 18. Both are in fine working condition.

I read a Yanmar ServiceStar that all KH transmissions should be allowed to freewheel when sailing.

I believe the HK 18 is a hydraulic transmission. I am getting a lot of conflicting advice:

1) Yanmar - free wheel
2) Mechanics - installs a shaft lock or feathering prop else I will ruin the transmission.

I read this chain of posts and saw that the KH 18 was designed to freewheel without damage.

Can someone offer a little more detail on the subject.

Thanks

Chris
