I am composing the master list of All known race ratings for the HCs. I will post this on the site in a more permanent format in a couple weeks. Note that these can and will change from year to year based on rule changes, clubs and location. This is just a very close approximation. BTW - HCs can race and win. An HC38/Telstar won the Transpac in its class a few years back. Here is what I have so far. Feel free to add and correct.

Our rating (PHRF-NW) is 184/208 and the standard rating for a 43 is 178.

Tom,

Any idea how the Stardard Rating is derived? The YRA in San Francisco has a HC43 Ketch that was rated back in '95 as a 144. I've been trying to read up on the racing stuff, as we're considering joining in on a few of the local offshore events. It seems as though a 144 is a bit low. Where did you happen to come across the Standard of 178?

Dino

The PHRF website has the formula on the site. I looked at it while doing the research. I also read at least TWO seperate threads on different racing sites stating the HC in particulars has been getting a bum rap on the ratings. One owner was complaining because he had been classed with the Beneteau 40. A mismatch at best.

178 was listed on my PHRF-NW rating form as the standard rating for a HC43. Our rated sails included:
130% #1 genoa
109% #2 genoa
165% drifter
200% tri-radial spinaker
2 blade fixed prop

Some interesting discussion can be found about how competitive our big beauties and similar boats can be. In less than 12k we really cannot compete in short course races. The field will even out more for cruising class type boats when the winds pick up. Where these boats really show their stuff is in ocean races. We went to the SD Yacht club last night for the Newport Ensenada seminar. They were joking about the cruising class boats but did concede last year was our year because of the high winds. I'm crewing on a big ole Spindrift 47 (same as Kelly Peterson 47). She is actually quite fast out there in the open. Based on how we do this year I may enter the Newport Ensenada race next year in our HC38. We shall see. At least it will be fun. I am not really into competitive racing, its more about the camaraderie and the FOOD than anything else.

I hear ya.....we're certainly not going to diet or strip the boat to get into race trim. We're intersted in getting some more offshore time and making new friends....at the same time having the tunes cranking and the cocktails at the ready.....once tied up of course ;>).

Good luck in Ensenada!

Keep us posted

I looked at the rating for my 43K before purchasing, and decided that at 144 (regatta) and 150 (random leg) in So. Cal., it would take a major miracle to win, so I'll keep racing the racing boat, and enjoy my perfect cruising boat.

No matter what you do to a HC, no matter what sails, and even with Mark Reynolds or Vince Brun, a Paul Cayard or Russel Coutts driving, a well sailed J-24 at PHRF 174 will slaughter any HC in a regatta. Even in the 177/204 range, a J-24 will prevail.

Random Leg, in anything less than 25kts for the whole race, and a 150 rating just won't do it against the boats that typically race in that rating band, i.e. anywhere from 104 to 201.

The real unfortune thing is that a Peterson 44 rates 126, and worse, a Valient 40 rates 138. In any "Transpac" type race that is completely off the wind, these boats will sail close to 100 sec./mi. faster than any model HC. So even if you got a 177 to 201 rating it's nowhere near a horse race...

Dino asked about "standard ratings". PHRF issues a "provisional" rating to un-rated boat types for the first time. This is based on the measurement sheet. For HC's, the ratings have been established already. To change the rating, you have to have race data to present at first, the local level, then possibly the regional level (to affect the "base" rating). PHRF is based on "observed performance", something completely lost on most folks.

To my knowledge, I have never heard of anyone coming forth in the So. Cal. area to ask for a rating review on any HC model.
